The history of OOSHIMA TSUMUGI

OOSHIMA TSUMUGI $2,000(Value) OOSHIMA TSUMUGI is produced in Amami-Ooshima(Islands) and Kagoshima-city at current.
The location of Both of Amami-Ooshima & Kagoshima-city is warm area in Japan.
TSUMUGI weave by hand tufted, first appeared at Amami-Ooshima in The NARA period (A.D.710 - ) that called HEIJOKYO period and it was called "Katshoku(Brown color) Tsumugi". The historical fact is recorded on the gift list for Nara-Todaiji (famous temple), Shosoin (famous estate) as "Gifted the Brown color Tsumugi from South Island.".
It is assumed this Brown color Tsumugi to be colored with dye from nature grass and plant of Amami-Ooshima as well as the technique of ancient dyeing with Japanese Ume blossom & Peach blossom on Yamato (the origin of Japan) around A.D. 668 (Tenchi Tenno period).
The TECHI tree, it is used for dyeing at current, was included in the material for dyeing in the past period. TECHI tree is regional dialect of Amami. Other name is SHARIN-BAI (Raphiolepis indica).
Around the 6th century, the people of Amami-Ooshima had chance to contact Chinese and people of South Island in order to Kentoshi (Japanese mission to Tang) passed through on Amami-Ooshima.
The period was unknown, the clothes for the people of Amami-Ooshima was made by BASHO thread. And clothes made by the thread of silkworm was gifted to Tenno.
Since Ryukyu-Ohkoku (Okinawa) was established around A.D. 1429, the people of Amami-Ooshima were govern under the Ryukyu-Ohkoku.
Around the early of Edo period, Ooshima Tsumugi was weaved using IZARI-ki (kind of loom) with thread from spanned floss silk with vegetation dyestuff.
The process is similar of the process for YUUKI TSUMUGI at current. Design was no pattern or just stripe, it was not designed with KASURI (splashed) pattern yet.
